November 30th, 2009 - How To Handle Serious Illness During Caribbean Holidays

People plan things for their holidays throughout the year, but sometimes these very holidays prove quite disastrous for them when they become a victim of some untoward circumstances, or illness. It is true that illness, and misfortune can catch you any time and at any place. It is always better if you remain mentally prepared for such circumstances.

It is very normal that due to the change of the place, the weather may not suit you, or the food does not suit you, and you become ill because of it. Many illnesses are very common among the tourists travelling to any place of the world including gastric illnesses, salmonella, and E. coli. Therefore, every tourist must take good care of himself when travelling to Caribbean, or any other place.

It is often said that prevention is always better than cure. You must be prepared, and take all the preventive measures to ensure that nobody gets sick during the trip instead of medicating them after they get sick. Still, it happens that after so much care, you still get sick, and in that case, you should immediately take measures to get well. There are always doctors available in almost every resort, and hotel in the Caribbean, so if you get sick you can consult them. Nevertheless, sometimes they might not be available, so in that case, you must go to the doctor in the nearby area.

You can also contact to your tour representative to get medical treatment, and if it is not possible for you to contact him/her, you can ask from your resort or hotel reception to get medical treatment.

It is quite possible that you would have to pay for the treatment at the spot, but this expense can be claimed once you get back home; therefore, you must keep the receipts in safe custody. One more important thing is that if you are buying a travel policy, you must check with them if they are providing any insurance policy to fly you back to your hometown, so you can get the treatment near your home. It is not necessary that for minor illness, you should rush home. However, if the illness is serious, or you are badly injured, then you must get back to your home.

For the past few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the cases of different gastric illnesses in the Caribbean, which usually indicates bad hygienic conditions in the restaurants, and kitchens of the hotels. You must not take the food if you think it is infected with bacteria; the second step is to make a complaint against it.

If the food was included in the tour package of the resort, or the hotel where you were staying, then you can claim against them. Once you get back to UK, you must immediately seek some legal help to settle your claims against the tour operator. Do not try to work out the claim with the tour operator by yourself.

Although you can contract food poisoning in any area of the world, but you must take special care while staying in the Caribbean, as it is known for it. Therefore, you must be very careful, if you do not want to ruin your holiday. Try to take suggestions about the resorts and hotels, from the people who have already been there.
